About The Brand
Ilio Nema was founded by Ariane Leondaridis and Katia Kelso. Both of Greek heritage, Ariane was born in Paris and Katia in Sydney. Their shared passion for artisanal craft was forged when they worked collaboratively in New York as Design Director and Production Director respectively.
Their ethos is to counteract trend-based consumption by reintroducing timeless and traditional craftsmanship to modern life. Therefore hand-crafted practices are the foundation of what they do.
Together, they travel the globe to source the most beautiful, artisanal traditions and celebrate the communities who have preserved their heritage for generations. Each garment has a unique story and also reflects their appreciation for those who bring their traditional skills and practices to their collection.
Ilio Nema pieces are made to be nurtured, mended and loved forever.

SUSTAINABLE + ARTISAN
Ilio Nema only use natural fibres and mostly natural techniques. They believe in going back to basics; slowing the process down to appreciate the art of hand craft. Traditional artisanal techniques require fewer machines which means a lesser impact on the environment.
They do not design and demand, rather they partner with their suppliers in a collaborative way. This begins with a conversation to understand what fabrics are already available. They use ‘remnant fabrics’ which are often left over from other designers' collections and destined for landfill. These fabrics are of perfect quality but are surplus to others' requirements. They also handloom using BCI (Better Cotton Initiative), cut by hand, as one of a kind.
ETHICAL
Ilio Nema work with artisan communities by supporting rural development, stimulating employment where opportunities are lacking and sustaining production circles that are in proximity to farmer producers. Ilio Nema helps artisans to keep their skills alive, keep families together and keep knowledgeable elders engaged in community life.
Working with suppliers that they have long standing relationships with, they ensure the wellbeing of their Supply Partners. Their partners are family-owned businesses in rural locations in countries that are too often exploited for cheap labour. They ensure their partners strictly abide by their code of ethical trade including: compensation rates, health and safety, working hours, overtime payment and the complete rejection of the use of child labour.
MINIMAL WASTE
Ilio Nema make sure their packaging is fit for purpose to protect your threads and to avoid unnecessary excess. As well as using remnant fabrics in their clothing, they have taken the opportunity to use fabric off-cuts from their collection to create cloth bags for their packaging. The hang-tags are made from recycled cardboard and a cotton thread and finally a compostable shipping bag is used to complete the packaging process.
