10 Styling Tips For Your Christmas Table

It's almost Christmas, so to help you tick another thing off your list, we've come up with some tips to help you 'tablescape' for your festive feasts...

1. Layer your table setting

Swap out the traditional table setting at Christmas, with the side plate to the left of the dinner plate, for a layered setting, where the side plate and dessert bowl sit perfectly on the dinner plate. For a really festive look, consider tying a bow around the setting so that when your guests sit down they feel like they're opening a present.

2 Mix and match your plates

Create some interest at your Christmas table by to mixing and matching the crockery. Patterned side plates or plates with patterns look great when teamed with plain or coloured crockery.

3 Move the cutlery

Cutlery doesn't always have to sit on either side of the dinner plate. For a festive change, try placing your cutlery horizontally at the top of the plate. Another touch is to tie your knives and forks with a piece of ribbon and place them on top of your plate. Or lay your cutlery on top of a cloth napkin to one side of your plate.

4. Bring the tree to the table

Tree decorations aren’t just for the tree, they look great on the Christmas table too. A collection of baubles displayed in a glass vase or bowl will look stunning as a centrepiece and a few decorations scattered on your table among your serving dishes will also help create a Christmas look.

5. Add special touches

Instead of doing bon-bons, treat guests with a table gift, like a special sweet treat or a decoration they can take home and add to their own tree. A handwritten name tag is also a thoughtful keepsake.

6 Let there be light

Your main table setting should have candles, regardless of the time of day. They'll help create the festive mood. Try clustering a group of candles in the middle of, or at each end of, the table for a clean and simple look.

7. Group the glasses

Your Christmas table setting should have three types of glasses: a Champagne flute for the toast, a wine glass and a water glass. While these would traditionally sit in a group to the right above the dinner plate, play around with their positioning for a modern look.

8 Forget the placemats

Nothing says special occasion for than a linen or crisp cotton tablecloth. Add a table runner to make a bold statement in the middle of the table, or change things up and have them running down each side of the table.

9. Style your napkins

Fold, twist or tie your napkins to give them a special occasion vibe. Napkin rings can also add that little something extra but they don't need to be the traditional type. Use Christmas decorations and twine or ribbon to make your own 'napkin rings'.

10. Enjoy

Christmas is about spending time with your loved ones, so lunch or dinner should be enjoyed and not rushed. Try the ‘family table’ serving style to give guests the option to select what they like. Use different-shaped platters, bowls, plates and serving spoons/tongs to continue the Christmas vibe.
